Night Rating Course Overview
Whether you've recently gained your PPL or have been flying for many years, the Night Rating is the perfect way to expand your flying privileges. Flying after sunset introduces new challenges and provides valuable learning opportunities, helping you develop new skills and build confidence as a pilot. If you plan to progress towards a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), obtaining a Night Rating is also a mandatory prerequisite.
The course begins with dual instruction, introducing you to the skies at night. You’ll learn about aircraft and airfield lighting, night circuits, take-offs and landings, visual illusions, and procedures for handling lighting failures. As your confidence grows and skills develop, you’ll complete the required five solo full-stop night take-offs and landings, together with a dual cross-country flight.
Alongside your flight training, you'll receive comprehensive ground instruction covering the key principles of night operations. Topics include weather considerations, airfield lighting, flight planning, human factors, visual illusions, and emergency procedures, ensuring you have the knowledge and confidence to operate safely after dark and knowledge you will be able to utilise even for your daytime flights.
Once you have successfully completed the required five hours of night flight training and your instructor is satisfied that you have reached the required standard, they will issue your Course Completion Certificate. Unlike most other licence ratings, the Night Rating does not require a Skill Test with an examiner. You can apply immediately to have the rating added to your licence, and once issued, it remains valid for life.
Night Rating Course Pre-requisites
There are no pre-entry requirements to train for the night rating other than the requirement to pass the appropriate training course and hold the appropriate medical certificate.
You must hold at least a class 2 medical without anything restricting it's use at Night.
The night rating for aeroplanes can be endorsed on a LAPL, NPPL or PPL.

When can you do the Night Rating at Shoreham?
For the training to be credited towards the Night Rating it must take place during the hours of night. In the UK, the Air Navigation Order (ANO) defines night as "the time from half an hour after sunset until half an hour before sunrise (both times inclusive), sunset and sunrise being determined at surface level". As Brighton City Airport (Shoreham) is open from 08:00–20:00 Monday to Friday, 09:00–20:00 on Saturdays and 09:00–19:00 on Sundays, we conduct our Night Rating courses during the part of the year when these hours overlap with the legal definition of night.
This falls between the months of October to April, normally in line with the dates that the clocks change for daylight saving hours. Progress to completing your Night Rating, like any flying course, can be heavily influenced by weather so getting started earlier in the season is preferable. If you start too late in the season and are unable to complete the minimum five hours of training and reach the required standard before the season ends, you cannot complete the remaining hours the following winter. The CAA only accepts Night Rating training completed within a six-month period for licence application.
We are able to book night ratings in advance so feel free to get in touch ahead of the season to make sure you get a place on the courses for the next season.
