Aircraft Hire FAQ Section

If you already fly from Brighton City Airport and are current on the same aircraft type you wish to hire, our Head of Training may be able to accept your existing checkout without requiring you to complete an additional flight with us. Get in touch with our flight operations team so that we can assess your currency and experience before getting you in the air.

You must fly at least once every 28 days with STAR to ensure you remain current, otherwise you will need to complete shortened club checkout with one of our Instructors.

Before hiring one of our aircraft, pilots are required to complete an initial checkout flight with one of our instructors. This ensures every pilot is safe and familiar with our operations before flying independently.

Once cleared, you will be approved to hire the specific aircraft type you completed your checkout in. If you'd like to hire a different type — such as the Cessna 152 or Piper PA28 — you will need to complete a short differences training course with an instructor in that aircraft.

Your initial club checkout flight will consist of:

  • An unassisted departure and arrival from Brighton City Airport (EGKA)
  • A Short VFR Navigation around the VRP's
  • General Handling (Stalls, Steep Turns, Spiral Dive Recovery etc)
  • Practice Forced Landing
  • Simulated Engine Failure after Takeoff
  • Flapless, Glide and Normal approaches

The flight typically lasts around an hour for pilots already familiar with Brighton City Airport. If you're new to the field, we're happy to split the checkout into two sessions to ensure you feel fully confident operating from EGKA.

Yes, within limits. The CAA has produced detailed guidance on cost-sharing flights, which you can read on their website.

At Star Flight Training, we permit members to split the cost of a flight with their passengers in line with CAA rules, provided those passengers are genuine pre-existing acquaintances — friends, family, or colleagues. We do not permit members to advertise or market seats to the general public, including through cost-sharing platforms such as Wingly.
